Cathedral of Valdivia

The Cathedral of Valdivia is located next to the Republic Square in the center of the city. The cathedral building currently houses the Cathedral Temple on the second floor; the first floor is arranged with a chapel for the worship services, the Crypt of the Bishops, the funeral room, and the offices and premises of the Parish of Our Lady of the Rosary; finally, the basement layout is designed to contain a museum that preserves different religious objects. In the central nave of the cathedral you will find the Virgin of the Rosary that was donated by King Felipe IV of Spain in 1645.

The architectural representation of the current construction corresponds to a proposal debating around two principles: on the one hand its contextual references, such as the bell tower, with its 50 meters high that stands playing a superimposition of vaulted spaces; and on the other hand, an "every-day" chapel" on the lower floor, and the Cathedral itself on top.

The Museum shows the material and spiritual foundations of the Church in Valdivia. It exposes a synthesis of the evangelization of these lands from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century, referring to the founding of the Church, the religious families involved in the mission, the artistic and cultural manifestations, and the liturgical celebrations.
